This is a great message thread! I'm a P1510D owner and running low on disk space. I bought the system refurb'd from Fujitsu and it had the extended battery (which I got replaced due to the battery recall just as it stopped accepting a charge), but it only had the 30GB HD. And I'm down to 2GB free. I've got an 8GB 120X CF card and a 4GB 150X SD card for extra space.

So, seeing this, I'm considering finding a MK6006GAH and doing the 60 GB upgrade/replacement. But I'd be fine with a 32GB CF card for the extra space.

The issue is whenever I do a big read or write to my current 120X 8GB CF card, the system "stutters" and slows. I assumed this was because the bus the CF card is on might be pegging the I/O. And I figured 120X was plenty fast enough.

So, Nomo, with that 32 GB 233X CF card, the P1510D works fine? Are all 32GB addressable (I know some devices can only read 8GB of it), and does the system "stutter" when you read/write to it? If not, I might go that route instead of replacing the HD. But if it does the same, I will just bite the bullet and upgrade/clone/replace...

THanks for your help!!!

Welcome to the forum. I've delayed purchasing a CF card so I can't relay any personal experiences. Also, the P16 uses a PCMCIA slot while the P15 has a dedicated CF slot; I'm not sure if the bus speeds are comparable. Here are a few ways to better understand the bottleneck in your system:
  • Read and (especially) write speed of the card: If you are running XP try using HDTach to measure the data transfer rate to the card.
  • Bus speed: Try reading the card with an external USB card reader. Measure the transfer rate with HDTach and also observe whether the stuttering problem recurs.
  • Processing capacity: Use Task Manager or another monitoring program to observe load while performing read/write transfers to the card. It's possible that the CPU or system memory is insufficient for smoothly processing very large files.
Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the advice! I'll do that tonite when I'm back home, assuming HDTach is easy to find and download. Also, I think my external reader is very old and may actually only be USB1.1. In any case, knowing the speeds in the P15 will be good to start.

Thanks again, ut it likely I will end up buying the 60GB MK6006GAH and replacing. I'd love to get a SSD, but the 64GB one is still selling for about $699...haha.

Thanks again Nomo. I just downloaded and will test it out.

Now, I've pretty much decided to go ahead with the HD upgrade anyways. (I just bought the MK6006GAH) I also like the idea of having a 30 GB 1.8" portable drive anyways...

But just to make sure I get the right type of enclosure, will this one work? I saw it referenced in the thread earlier. There are so many new ones now with ZIF/LIF support and not sure if they still work with these older drives. So, confirmation if this works (or recommendation of another that is available for sale) would be great!

Thanks again!

I posted my CF results in a more appropriate thread. Didn't want to hijack this one for others who stumble upon this great resource :)

I feel pretty stupid right about now. I never listed the enclosure I was asking about above. It's this one:

So I just read through bunch of threads, and from what I understand, the SSD on link below should work fine on my P1510 without any special modifications; just swap and go, correct?
Thanks for help in advance.

Nope, that's a ZIF connector. You'd need an adapter to match the microATA on the
1510's drive cable, assuming there is room in the 1510.

This one would work as a direct plug-in, for example...

There's also a 64GB.

Tom.

Hello, I have bought a P1610 that has only 30gb of hdd. I have not received yet, but I´m looking for posibilities for upgrading the hdd.
I have searching the forum and have found some links. Have found a new 1.8" hdd from Toshiba that it´s not released yet but will have 240gb.
Have a look: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/0,1000000091,39486537,00.htm
It´s the MK2431GAH, that it´s supposed started mass production in september, so maybe could be availbe soon.
My question is, if this drive has zif conector, do I need the 1620 cable? Or is there any other adapter? Where can I get it at afordable price if posible?
Thanks a lot for the forum.

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the forum. It looks like the P1620 cable should work. The cable is currently available online: CP360271-XX HDD-Cable

Note that the 240GB drive is only 4200rpm. Depending on the read/write performance, you might also consider a 5400rpm 120GB drive.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I think that hard drive is a bit expensive. I don´t think there is much problem with the 4200 rpm. I have now a Samsung Q1 with one 4200 rmp and works ok for me. There is a 120gb version at reasonable price here: http://www.alternate.es/html/productDetails.html?artno=ABDT12
I have no idea when the 240gb may be released, so I think could be going for the 120gb 4200 aswell.

Thanks! Ordered both the connector and the 5400RPM drive. Will try Windows 7 on the new one, keep XP on the old one in case of trouble.

Yes, the MK6006GAH works using the original P1610 HDD cable. The drive is discussed earlier in this thread. The MK8007GAH also fits.

hi there,
i would like to ask, what is the largest capacity 5400rpm drive I can get to fit inside a p1610.
will it accomodate 8mm as well as 5mm drives?
i've currently managed to squeeze XP tablet, Vista and OS X 10.5.2 on to the tiny 30gb hard drive,
and have pretty much run out of room.

model numbers and links would be awesome.

if i understand the other posts correctly in this thread,
i can replace the HDD cable with the one used in the 1620,
so i can connect a zif 1.8hdd.
if so one of these would be great,

thanks,

While I often find lengthy sticky threads difficult to navigate, I'll exacerbate the problem by this entry just intended to thank nomo, whose excellent advice above has my P1610 with zif cable and 5400RPM 120GB hard drive working perfectly, and NuovoTech, whose instructions here:

http://www.leog.net/fujp_forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12430

made the installation easy. (I'm not sure I would have figured out how to open the connector without it!)

Thanks nomo! Thanks NuovoTech!

I have a question about the solid state drive. My understanding from a tech rep today was that the P1620 is limited to 32GB for a SSD. Is this correct? I guess you could partition and SSD like any other HD but is there really a 32GB limit?

Thanks

There is no hard limit at 32GB, but it's difficult to find anything over 32GB in PATA.

you'll only be stuck at 32gb if you format it standard fat32.
you would have to format in ntfs, or get an extended fat32 formating tool.
